Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway!

Starting your own business is scary stuff and anyone that tells you differently, well, I just don't think I would really believe them (unless I happen to be talking to Donald Trump or someone of that level of success!). Whether it is a multi-million dollar venture or one that you start for just $39.95, the fear of the unknown and the fear of failure more often than not paralyzes people from even taking that first step. 

I used to be one of those people, one that would get so scared of a situation that I would avoid it or not participate, even though there was always a little voice inside telling me "Go ahead, you will be okay". The fear of the unknown and the fear of failure would stop me cold in my tracks. It wasn't until I decided to "Feel the fear and do it anyway" that changes really started to happen, in both business and personal life. 

We all have defining moments in our lives, those moments that we can look back on and say "That is something that changed me as a person". It might be big or it might be small, but it is something that changes you, from the inside. One of those is the day I held an alligator. Might not be a big deal to some, after all, Snappy was only about 3 feet long and did have his mouth taped shut. But it was something that made be step out of my comfort zone and once I did it, I was really proud that I didn't let my fear hold me back.

In 2010, I made a conscious choice to grab a hold of any opportunity that came my way, no matter how scared or nervous I was. That any door that opened, I was going to go through and see where it led me. I have to say, 2010 was my favorite year of my life (so far) because of all the opportunities that came my way and the new friends I made and the growth I made as a person overall. I had the opportunity to be interviewed on TV three times, as well as be on a webcast show. I started my own independent personal training business and took my Beachbody business to a whole new level. I even improved my relationship with my husband! All because I decided to "feel the fear and do it anyway!". I've gotten really good with being comfortable stepping outside my comfort zone, something the the same girl a few years ago wouldn't have done in a million years!

How does this apply to your network marketing business? The only way you will ever be successful in your business is by "feeling the fear and doing it anyway". Nothing that comes easy is usually worthwhile, so learn to get comfortable stepping outside your comfort zone. Know that there are going to be considerable amount of times that you are going to be extremely scared or nervous, but you need to push through and do it anyway. This is what makes us grow as people, as leaders and as business owners, period.

Are You a PIONEER?



Starting your own network marketing business can be a lonely thing. You are introduced, in one way or another, to a company and you see the potential to make, at the very least a decent living and at the most, a substantial amount of money, that will never be possible at the job you are currently at.

So, you get excited and start to share with your family and friends and BAM!!!! You get the new network marketers worst nightmare..... the negative comments and put downs that the more seasoned veterans know are just part of the territory and growing process.
At this point, you have two choices: you can either be a pioneer, trudge forward, much like our ancestors did, or quit and prove them right. We always have a choice.

If you think about it, being a pioneer is really an extraordinary thing. One of my favorite shows of all time is "Little House on the Prairie". The idea of the pioneers, the people that were forward thinking enough, were courageous enough, okay, were BALLSY enough, to pack up themselves, their families and what few belongings they had in their covered wagon to take off to God knows where, just completely amazes and inspires me. And what they found was a whole new world and ways of doing things, that those that ridiculed them and stayed behind never found. It's thinking like a pioneer that truly makes long lasting, life changes.

How does this correlate to your network marketing career? Well, there are going to be people that tell you negative things about your business, like "It's a pyramid scheme", "The only people that make money are the people at the top" or "Who really buys that crap?". It is now that you have to decide if you are going to think like a PIONEER or choose to stay stuck where you are. If you are a pioneer, you will have just ignore those voices and move forward. Just like the original pioneers did.

Stop and think about what those pioneers that left the east and headed west found? What did they do when they first came upon the Mississippi River? Definitely an obstacle, right? They could second guess themselves, say, "I guess they were right, this was a bad idea. What was I thinking?" and turn back. Some probably did, or stayed stuck and made a home in what is now Illinois. But others found a way over the river. 

Then, they make their way across the plains. Some probably thought, as they made their way across what is now Iowa and Nebraska, "Man, this is some FLAT, BORING land. If this is all there is, I should've listened and just stayed put". They may have decided to quit and plant themselves there, somewhere in the middle of flat Nebraska. But others moved forward.

Those that continued one, found the land to start to get more hilly; probably pretty tough on horses, wagon wheels and morality as a whole. The weather likely got colder. But, after they continued forward, found themselves in the beauty yet treacherous terrain of the Rocky Mountains. What would they have missed had they turned back or stopped where they were at? Anyone that has spent any time at all in the Rockies knows what I'm talking about.

They found ways to let those back home know they were okay and had found beauty and bounty beyond their dreams and soon, others follow suit and the West was gradually settled. But it all started with the pioneers that decided to venture out on their own, knowing there had to be a better life out there.

We need to think like the pioneers, knowing that many, if not most, of the people in our lives will not, at least initially, have our backs. They might think they do, telling you, "I just don't want you to make a mistake/get screwed over/ make a fool of yourself" or whatever their "concerns" might be. But you, the pioneer, need to listen to yourself, knowing that if you continue on, you will get  all that you dreamed of and quite likely much, much more, and sooner or later, others will follow behind you. The choice is yours. Be a pioneer.

Quite shocking, isn't it? Now, this is just like running your own network marketing business. It is also like starting a fitness program, or getting organized, or paying off debt. It's just like a lot of things in life.

You start out in a brand new business. You are learning about your business, talking to people, attending meetings and trainings, and a couple weeks go by and you aren't making the big bucks yet. You can decide "Damn, this doesn't work" or, instead, you can get back at it. So you learn some more about your business, talk to even more people, go to more meetings and trainings. Then, you start seeing, after enough time has gone by, that your little bitty penny, doubled every day, has turned into a fairly substantial amount of money, of confidence, of a productive downline and a fantastic bank balance. 

If you stop on day 2 or 7 or 14 or even 21, you will never see how much that one little penny can end up being worth. So, don't stop focusing on what can happen, if you stick to it, and work on doubling that penny, every single day. The results will shock you!

Are You PASSIONATE About Your Company and Products?

I have been with my company, Team Beachbody, for awhile now and have seen some unbelievable success. One thing I'm coming to realize more and more though, is that most people will never be successful if they are not PASSIONATE about their products and mission of their company.

There are people out there that are comfortable enough with sales that they can sell ANYTHING. Reality is though, that isn't most of us. The only way we will be able to sell something is if we love it and are passionate about it.

One of my newer coaches told me that she had once decided to become a distributor for Mary Kay. Great company, great products and countless number of successful people. She did like the products, but wasn't passionate about the products. Needless to say, she was not successful with her Mary Kay business. But, she realized that she is passionate about being fit and healthy for her husband and kids, wants to be a great role model for them as well as others, and being a coach with Beachbody was a more natural fit.

So, one thing you need to evaluate when deciding what type of business you want to start with, is if you are passionate enough about the products and the vision of the company to be truly successful. After all, that is top on the list of why people want to start their own business. If being a top producer or even just making some extra money to help with the monthly bills is a goal of yours, be sure you are in love with the products, making it second nature when sharing and increasing your chances of success.
